BOOK REVIEWS

Intriguing

Interesting cast of complex characters. Jealousy, cheating, conspiracies, gossip, murder plots, robberies, addiction and a little karma in the end. The book is full of twists and turns, guilt, selfishness and a friendly ghost! Great Sunday read!

This book has lots of heart!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little different from what I normally read, but it kept me interested and wanting to know what was going to happen. I really liked the small-town Maine setting and the mystery surrounding Elmer. As the story went on, there was much more to him and the other characters than you first expect. I especially liked how the book showed both the good and bad sides of people and made you think about how quickly we judge someone without really knowing their story. There were some darker and sad moments, but also a lot of heart. Overall, it was an interesting and emotional story that stayed with me after I finished it.

Great Reading

Really enjoyed reading this book. It had lots of twists and turns and unexpected events! Love the descriptive language throughout the book.

Couldn't Stop Reading!

What a good read! This book is filled to the hilt with devious plans and murder is in the air. It seems to follow a close-knit small country town around hunting season and the people who live there. For a town that is so close knit, secrets travel like a buck running for its life. It is only a matter of time until all those secrets come to a head. A boy befriends an old man Elmer, living in the woods, that somehow sticks around after his death, to save the boy who befriended him and the boy's family and friends. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, through all the twists and turns.

Reflective

It’s a beautifully reflective book that creates a strong sense of place while exploring themes of nature, memory, connection, and the experiences that shape us. The writing has an atmospheric quality that makes the setting feel almost like a character of its own. I especially enjoyed the thoughtful tone and the way the story encourages you to slow down and appreciate the deeper meaning behind the events and surroundings. There is a sense of warmth and authenticity throughout the book that makes it easy to become immersed in. This is a good choice for readers who enjoy reflective storytelling, meaningful themes, and books that leave you thinking about them after you finish. Overall, a memorable and engaging read with plenty of heart.

"In the Spirit of" living in a small town

"In The Spirit Of Elmer's Woods" by Dennis Corcoran is a tasty read that encompasses the trials and tribulations of life in a small town. Corcoran paints a vivid picture of Jessup, Maine and the characters he created. Elmer, the main character, has a pained history that begins to heal when his heart is softened in an act of heroism. Elmer shows his true colors throughout the book as he works to protect the people he identifies as good. There are characters and situations that give this book a bite, but there are areas where too much detail, too much attention, draws the story out. A quick read, characters you can root for and against, and an ending that somehow fills all the holes I was left with.

Engaging Read

Progress in the Spirit of Elmer’s Woods is a thoughtful and engaging read that blends personal reflection, atmosphere, and a strong sense of place. Dennis Corcoran creates a story that feels both intimate and meaningful, with plenty to make the reader stop and think. While it may not be for everyone, those who enjoy reflective storytelling and character-driven writing will likely find something worthwhile here.

Descriptive and Engaging

First and foremost, the writing was descriptive without being overbearing or boring. It felt like the author was painting a picture with words. Secondly, the story is gripping. It follows a handful of characters, which was difficult for me in the beginning because I had trouble with names, but, the thrills and heart of this novel kept me locked in.

Intense and Intriguing

Wow! I was not expecting that based on the book description! That was intense but in a good way. I couldn’t put it down and read it in few hours. The author really made you feel like you were there and very descriptive without being overbearing. There were many characters which may be hard to follow for some but you really feel like you know them and some of them you don’t like in the least but you know them. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and the twists and turns you didn’t see coming made it a good read. It was not predictable which I loved!

Top Notch Writing

It is not the genre I usually go for but still ended enjoying it! The appreciated the authors writing style. The detailed descriptions and character development really made this book for me. The unexpected plot twists and turns made this a page turner that I couldn’t put down. The wonderful writing skills make this book a worthy read for reading fans of all genres.

Total page-turner

The setting is a character in itself. Corcoran paints Jessup, Maine, as one of those places that looks beautiful on a postcard but feels suffocating when you actually live there. You can practically smell the pine needles and the freezing pond water. It’s moody, isolated, and perfectly sets the stage for a story about greed and bad decisions. The story is a bit of a balancing act. On one hand, you’ve got the “soap opera” drama—adultery, power hungry rivalries, and the kind of town gossip that ruins lives. On the other hand, you have the heart of the book: the relationship between a mysterious hermit and the young boy he saves. That bond acts as the moral compass of the story, which is a nice contrast to the chaos happening in the rest of the town. It’s definitely a slow burn mystery. It takes its time setting up the stakes, but once the murder plot kicks into gear, the tension ramps up pretty quickly. The suspense comes from the fact that everyone in this town is hiding something, and you’re just waiting for the whole house of cards to collapse. If you enjoy character driven thrillers where the "evil" isn't some cartoon villain, but just regular people pushed too far by ambition, you’ll dig this. It’s definitely a "don't trust your neighbors" kind of story that reminds you that the quietest towns usually have the loudest skeletons in their closets.

A Chilling and Heartwarming Town Mystery

Dennis Corcoran delivers an unforgettable story set in the small town of Jessup. In the Spirit of Elmer's Woods perfectly balances a chilling murder plot driven by reckless ambition with a deeply touching emotional core. The unlikely bond between the mysterious hermit, Elmer, and the young boy he rescues from a freezing hidden pond is beautifully written. Watching them navigate the dangerous secrets threatening their community kept me turning pages late into the night. It is a powerful tale of survival and choices. Highly recommended!

Very interesting murder mystery

In The Spirit of Elmer’s Woods is a good murder and mystery book all in a small town of town in Maine. This book will keep you on your toes guess till the end. It has jealously, addiction, robbery, cheating, and guilty to keep you going for a great read.

Small-Town Drama With a Supernatural Twist

'In the Spirit of Elmer's Woods' combines small-town drama, family problems, secrets, and a touch of the supernatural. I enjoyed the rural Maine setting and how the story follows several characters whose lives gradually become connected. There is a lot going on beneath the surface, including strained relationships, financial troubles, questionable decisions, and characters trying to figure out whom they can trust. I especially liked the mystery surrounding Elmer and the woods. That element gives the story an eerie feeling without taking away from the more realistic problems the characters are dealing with. The story takes its time developing the different characters and their conflicts, but things become increasingly tense as their choices begin catching up with them. It was an interesting mixture of family drama, mystery, suspense, and supernatural fiction, and I was curious to see how everything would eventually come together.

A great mystery to read!

Set in rural Maine, this atmospheric and haunting mystery pulls you in right from the start. The author crafts a deeply moving story about grief, fear, and human connection as two curious boys venture into the woods to discover the truth behind a local legend. It’s beautifully written, compelling, and leaves a lasting impression. A fantastic read for anyone who loves a great mystery!

Warm fuzzies

This was an amazing book. Through murder and small-town gossip. The town came together during true need for one of their own. The author made an inspirational story of hardship and renewal for warm fuzzies of the heart. Wonderful book.

It’s dark and sad sometimes, but it has a lot of heart.

I liked this book, even though it wasn’t my usual kind of read. It’s about this small town in Maine, Jessup, where reckless ambition, adultery, secrets, and a hunger for power slowly poison everyone. Rivalries and forbidden relationships turn into suspicion and revenge, and then a murder plot starts dragging in friends, families, and neighbors. Meanwhile, a mysterious hermit named Elmer saves a young boy and his dog from freezing water in a hidden pond in the woods. They form this unlikely bond and kind of help each other make the right choices while all the dark, dangerous stuff is happening. I really liked the small-town Maine setting and the mystery around Elmer. He and the other characters are much more than you first expect. The book shows the good and bad in people and makes you think about how quick we judge someone without knowing their story. It’s dark and sad sometimes, but it has a lot of heart. It builds to a good vs evil confrontation where the truth might cost everything. Overall, it was interesting and emotional and stayed with me after I finished.

Very good read.

I really enjoyed the mix of mystery, emotion, and suspense in this story. The main character’s retreat into the Maine woods following heartbreaking losses creates an interesting foundation for the events that follow. I especially liked the way the story explores grief, loneliness, and the struggle between good and evil while introducing unexpected encounters along the way. The secluded setting adds a haunting atmosphere, and the twists and secrets made me curious to see how the characters’ lives would ultimately come together.

I love Elmer’s character

This was a good read and I really got sucked in by the sweet relationship between Elmer and Luke. The other storylines were well written and full of drama but the Elmer/Luke storyline was my favorite.

Spoiler alert

Really enjoyed the story in this book, got the book for free but would have bought it anyway! Finished it in one day was such a thrilling story. Really liked Elmers part and how he saved the innocent people but was still with his family, living in the woods is a dream just a shack and being alone. The cheating was crazy and the mix of people was wild. My favorite was the kids trying to become men

Intrigued and Definitely Not Disappointed!

I wasn’t really sure what to expect after reading the book description, but I was so pleasantly surprised! The character development was excellent. I felt like I knew the characters - whether I liked them or not (and I definitely did not like some of them!). The descriptive language is outstanding - I felt like I was there, experiencing the sights and sounds of Maine. There is so much complexity to the characters and the story line. I couldn’t wait to find out how it was going to end. This would make a good movie! I definitely recommend this book, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Fantastic! One of my favorites.

A gripping well crafted novel. It draws you in quickly and never lets you go. I loved it! Two thumbs up and five stars!

Wonderful book from a first time author!

The character development and a vivid description of rural Maine make this a must read. You will not be disappointed. The storyline takes many twists and turns. Without giving away the ending…I will say I am looking forward to more stories from this Author. Hopefully, they will include Elmer.

Perfect Summer Read

Took this book to the beach and couldn't put it down. I was impressed by the amount of character development this first time author wove into the storyline. Great job Dennis! Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Professional Review

Dennis Corcoran's in the Spirit of Elmer's Woods is a deeply evocative portrait of one man's journey through griel, solitude, and the quiet moral choices that define a life. After the devastating loss of his daughter and wife, Elmer leaves behind his Massachusetts home and retreats to rural staine, settling into a modest shack hidden in the woods. Here, among towering trees and still waters, he seeks solace in isolation. But the people of Jessup, Maine with their layered personalities, secrets, and unvarnished humanity- inevitably weave themselves into his life. Through Elmer's eyes, we witness the duality of small-tawn living: kindness that runs deep, but also pettiness and cruelty that emerge when people reveal their true selves. Determined to protect the "good ones" he meets, Elmer takes actions that surprise, challenge, and ultimately redefine what it means to stand for something or someone-in a world that can be as unforgiving as it is beautiful. What makes this novel stand out is not just the storyline, but the authentic sense of place. Corcoran's Maine is not a postrard version-it is lived-in, wild, and quietly enchanting. His summers spent at a lakeside camp clearly inform every detail: the scent of pine after rain, the mirror-like stillness of the water at dawn, the bite of a cold morning in the woods. The setting doesn't simply frame the story, it breathes with it. Dennis, your work carries an honesty and depth that can't be manufactured. It's clear you didn't just write this book-you lived it through your intimate knowledge of Maine's landscapes and your empathetic understanding of human nature. You've created a story that feels both personal and timeless, with a protagonist who lingers in the reader's mind long after the last page You've accomplished what so many writers strive for you've made the reader feel. in today's market, where reasters crave genuine connection, in the Spirit of Elmer's Woods is positioned to stand out. I truly believe there is a loyal readership waiting for this kind of heartfelt, place-rich storytelling Your voice is authentic. Your setting is alive. And your story-full of quiet bravery - is one that matters. Keep going, Dennis. You've already built something enduring, and I believe this book has the power to move not just readers, but the market itself.
